Notes for lesson 24 Jan on application of theory

Have a look at the assessment criteria for a Level 4 essay (24 -30 marks out of 30)

The candidate must provide the following:
  • a clear and systematic account of the stages of production, from researching the brief and targeting an audience to a technical account of decisions and revisions made.
  • There is a detailed and thorough analysis of the finished product in terms of how decisions about form and content have affected meaning, and how the text communicates through its forms and conventions.
  • Where appropriate, explicit reference is made to ideas encountered on the course.
  • The production is placed in the wider context of media institutions and audiences by thorough analysis of the ways in which the text compares with real media output and an evaluation of the relationship of product to audience (including audience feedback)

How is THEORY relevant to these criteria?

ASSESSMENT

You will be assessed on the following tasks between now and November - some written, some practical. The results of these will form the basis of the progress reports that I will complete in November:

1. practical work and written reflections on your own thriller still
2. written analysis of allocated film still
3. dvd cover analysis
4. practical task - camera
5. practical task - continuity
6. your ongoing blog development

I will also take into account:

1. your verbal contributions in class
2. the way you prepare for lessons
3. your ability to meet a deadline and follow instructions
4. your efforts to keep up to date with work

Your individual and group blogs will eventually be submitted to OCR as evidence to support the mark you have achieved for coursework research, planning and pre-production. This is how the marks break down:

Research, planning and pre-production = 30 marks
Production (filming) and post-production (editing) 60 marks
Essay (30 marks)
Total = 120 marks

You would have to score around 98 marks to achieve an A for your coursework. If your film end product isn't quite as fantastic as you want it to be, you can still do well with great R+P and a really sound essay; it makes sense to get these right as you just never know with the production - anything could happen!

Hope this is useful
